Storage Tank Decommissioning

An underground storage tank (UST) system is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank. In Ontario, underground storage tanks are regulated by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). Once an underground storage tank ceases to be in use, or when it has been dormant (out of service) for two years, the underground storage tank system is required to be removed and all associated contaminated soil and groundwater remediated.

Underground storage tanks are commonly used to store gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil and other chemicals. All underground storage tanks have a regulated lifespan. Once an underground or above-ground storage tank has passed their specified lifespan, they are more prone to corrosion resulting in soil and groundwater contamination. Following the removal of a fuel tank, a comprehensive environmental assessment report must be completed by a licensed professional engineer in accordance with environmental protocols and regulations.
